October BP

Above is my Blood Pressure Chart for October. I've had a crappy run of walks.

Milestone

I passed a milestone today that I wasn't expecting or happy about. I weighed in at 223 pounds. I haven't been over 220 in quite a while and I shall endeavor to get back below and keep losing.

Of course, that is my constant struggle. The losing. I know what I should be doing but I just don't do it. Perhaps I need to get pissed off enough at myself to make it happen. Perhaps this will make me pissed off enough.

Stand by.

Ear Worm

I have come to realize that if I don't get up within three minutes of my 4:45 alarm going off, I'm not going to get up. This morning, I got up. So hurray for me.

I often wake up and go about my morning with an earworm. Today it was "Sandy" from Grease. For those who don't know, an earworm is a song that gets stuck in your head and refuses to leave. You constantly find yourself humming, singing or whistling the song in the background of your mind. You cannot get rid of it until you give it to someone else or play "Crocodile Rock". There! I just gave you an earworm.

The walk was really pleasant this morning. It was warmer than it has been which makes it much more tolerable. I got around the first lap in 17:11 and the second in 17:53. Total time was 35:05.

No raccoons were harmed or even seen this morning.

Coon Morning

I was pretty stiff and sore after a fairly active weekend so it was hard getting out of the house. I managed two miles in just under 40 minutes. No records were in danger today.

My walk was made a little slower by an encounter with nature.

I was walking in a particularly dark area and got a glimpse of a cat darting behind a small tree. It was kind of cartoonish where Jinx the Cat tiptoes behind a thin tree trunk and doesn't come out the other side, completely disappearing behind a tree you could never hide behind.

It was odd enough that it made me stop and look and figure out where the cat went.

Suddenly a figure swung around the side of the trunk a foot or two up. It was a young raccoon. We stared at each other for a few seconds and I said "Hi". At that point I noticed two other coons off the sidewalk and in the yard by a hedge. One of them was a big one. I figured that was Mom. Raccoons are mean so I had no intention of messing with them.

When I came around on the second lap, they were still in the same general area. I stopped and we again exchanged pleasantries and then I moved on. It seemed as though they wanted as little to do with me as I did with them.

It brings into question something I have been wrestling with. Should I bring my camera on these morning walks? I have resisted because it's bulky enough to be annoying, but not really annoying. I could have had a great raccoon picture this morning.

I have the same question about bringing my phone with me. The phone does have a camera but I am not impressed with it. However, you never know when having a phone with you on a dark early morning might come in handy.

I shall continue to wrestle and I will make this guarantee. On the mornings I carry the camera, there will be nothing to photograph.

Dr O'Connor Visit

It's been four months since I have been to see my General Practioner, Dr. O'Connor.

In preparation for today's appointment, I had to get a blood draw yesterday. Susan drove me out to work so I could hit the Vampire
Office first thing, but they didn't open until 8:00.

So I walked over at lunch time and made it there minutes before they closed for lunch at 12:30.

They had a little trouble finding a vein but eventually filled the vile.

So I got to Dr. O'Connor's office right on time at 8:15 and got in right away. My cholesterol was fine and a couple of the other tests he had them run looked okay as well. He is keeping an eye on liver function because a couple of the drugs I'm on mess with the liver.

I had him check my left fore arm. I have a tender spot I've noticed for about two months. It normally does not bother me. But, when I set it on the edge of a desk, and I hit just the right spot, it lights up the pain meter to 11. The odd thing is I can't just make it happen.

Dr. O'Connor messed with it, prodded it, made me push, pull and twist...all to no avail.

The conclusion to all this is the confirmation that I am still alive.

Back to the Grind

Today is our first day back to the regular world after several days of fun in San Francisquin, California. We ventured down for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, three days of free concerts on se7en stages in Golden Gate Park. We are actually pleased to be back at home and back to work. At 60, partying is hard.

I have all kinds of details and day by day blows about the trip at the other blog, www.my-life-as-a-house.blogspot.com.

In the meantime, I will tell you that I returned to the real world and got up and walked this morning. This, despite the late night arrival home last evening. I got in two miles in unimpressive times.

I have a Doctor's appointment in the morning with my General Practitioner. I haven't seen him since the shit hit the defibrillator back in June.

Diaster Averted

Today's walk was in danger of becoming a Pooper Walk but I was able to get home after the first lap and nip it in the toilet. My time was 19:11 and it was just starting to rain when I came in. That is the reason I'm not going back out.

I didn't realize it until I looked at my Blood Pressure chart for September but I have now been doing my morning walk for over a month. I would like to say that it is now a habit and I will continue to keep it up, but it hasn't gotten cold yet. I mean really cold. It will be much more difficult to walk when it's two degrees in the morning.
