Attitude Adjustment Needed

I really need to get my fat ass back into the gym. Or at least to a point were I kind of workout in some way in a regular fashion.

Today I am very sore and stiff and it's because I worked in the yard yesterday. I should not be sore just because I hauled a few leaves. That's pretty bad and reflective of my body being about 72 years old. If I don't do something about it, I'm just going to become more sedentary and more sore and then I'll die before I'm 73. By the way, I'm 51!

Problem is that I know all this and yet I still won't do anything about it. My best bet for getting myself back into the Club is to get up early and do it in the morning. That fits my schedule best. But I am not motivated enough to actually get up and do it. I am hoping that by writing it down here, it will generate some distaste of me by me and facilitate a visit to the gym.

Contemplations of a Fat Effer

It has been just over a month since I have posted anything here. I guess that's because I haven't been doing anything about working out or exercising...other than the daily exercise of getting through the day.

In fact, I'm writing now because I have been pondering my workout schedule or lack thereof, and wondering if I should continue my membership at my club. I am paying $100.00 a month and I haven't been there in $300.00. I know I need to get back down there but I can't seem to make the time to do it. I am not motivated to do it.

I had better figure it out soon because I am not in a position to toss a hundred dollars to the wind. I mean, think of all the beer and donuts I could buy for $100.00!

Well Being - Not so much

Now that the weather is cooling off and I am not riding the bicycle as much, I am starting to feel it in my general overall well being...or lack thereof. I am sore and achy and lethargic. I think I had better get my ass into the gyzum-naisium.

Skunk Report

No skunks were trapped last night. However, it appears that there is still at least one more under the Carriage House. I will do a better job of blocking the entrances tonight and see what sort of activity I get in the morning.

I really enjoyed having my bike out yesterday. It was a great day to ride. I was heading home through the park and noticed that the grass has already recovered from the damage caused during "Pig Out in the Park". It's pretty amazing how fast it comes back. Unless you are talking about my grass. I don't think it will ever come back.

Ode to Maggie May

Wake up Skunky. I think I got something to say to you.
It's late September and I really should be back at riding my bike to work.
I know I haven't ridden much. Driving seems to be a crutch.
Oh Skunky I couldn't riiiiide in the cold.

Okay, that's my cheesy tribute to Maggie May.

But it is late September and it looks like it is going to be a fabulous week for bike riding to work. I can't ride tomorrow because I have an install to do. I can't ride on Wednesday because I have a haircut after work on the South Hill. I really want to use what is left of good weather to ride and so I made it fit in today.

I wore shorts today and I wasn't sure how smart that would be due to the Autumn chill in the morning air. But it wasn't that bad of a ride downtown. As I said, it looks to be a great week of weather. Today's high is predicted to be 85. And it's late September!

My reference to Skunky was because I started my day by trapping two, not one but two, skunks in the backyard. I woke up at five and hauled them about ten miles away to the Skunk Dump.

I wonder how many I have left!

Me So Green with Autumn Hues

I managed to get a bike ride to work in this week. This will be the only day so I have to revel in my greenness.

It wasn't nearly as cold this morning as I thought it would be. It was surprisingly pleasant as I headed out down Wall Street toward my downtown destination. However, once I got to the final hill leading into the park, I gathered enough speed that my eyes were watering and I had an ice cream headache.

I cut it rather close as the bus was waiting at the stop when I arrived downtown. That's the kind of ride I like, where everything comes together.

I will attempt to get more rides in as the Fall goes on. I don't know how often, perhaps a couple times a week. It depends on the rain. That will be the main roadblock to my riding. I can handle the cold but I don't like getting soggy.

Later that Same Day:

The bus ride was like a little social gathering on wheels. It was the friendliest bunch of bus riders I have yet encountered. They were all talking and laughing and sharing details of their day. I was sitting there reading my newspaper and taking in a litle of the conversation. It was quite different from the rides I have taken. Usually, nobody is really talking and when they do, it is for short bits.

Lost Week

Last week was the first week since July that I didn't ride my bike to work at all. I managed to have a reason to drive every day. I was really disappointed on Thursday when events arranged themselves to prevent me from riding to work on Friday.

As for this week, I'll try harder.

But not today. I drove. I'm sure there is no relation between the colder mornings and my not riding.

A Day Off from the Bike

I did not ride my bike today. I do not wish to see my bike for a while. I participated in the first ever "SpokeFest" in downtown Spokane yesterday. I talked Susan into doing it as well. We rode the 21 mile course and my ass is chapped.

It didn't help that after the ride, we spent the rest of the day walking around at the Spokane Interstate Fair. We were both in bed by 9:30 and I had a fabulous night of outstanding unconsciousness.
I should say that the ride was really fun and we are both glad we did it and we are especially glad that it is over. I would also like to announce that I completed one of my two major goals for the ride. One was to complete it in two hours. Not even close. More like 2:50. The second was to ride all the way up Doomsday Hill. It is a pretty steep grade that is about a half mile long. That goal I made. It was actually pretty easy. No, that's not right. It was a tremendous effort and I was breathing heavily. But when I got to the top, I felt great and I was able to keep going without a break.

The newspaper reports this morning that 1,200 cyclists participated in SpokeFest. I would say that sounds about right.

It's Always Somethin'

With gloves on my hands and a light windbreaker on my body, my attention during my morning ride turned to my freezing ears. With as chilly as it has been in the mornings, and getting chillier, I will probably always find something to bitch about. Soon it will be darker. Gone are the days of pleasant rides on a warm morning.

Conversely, it's only a ten minute ride and it really is very pleasurable.

It has been very bright these last two mornings as the bus heads east into the sunrise. Here is a picture I took this morning to illustrate that.

The only reason I bring it up is because it is very difficult to read the paper in the morning when the sun is beaming through it. There! I found another thing to bitch about

Autumn Ride

I am a failure. I did not make my goal. First I wanted to log 150 miles for the month. When it became apparent that I was not going to make that, I re-goaled and set out to match last months mileage of 106 miles. I only rode 91 miles. And so, I refer you back to my first sentence. Fortunately, I'm over it.

I needed gloves this morning. Autumn is definitely in the air. It was quite brisk and I had to ride with no hands a couple of times to warm them up in my pockets. Still it was a nice ride.

I am not going to buy a Bus Pass this month. I do not plan on riding all that much. I will keep track of how much I spend and see if I come out ahead or behind the $33.00 a monthly pass would cost.

The park was bustling with activity this morning. They are still cleaning up from the weekend festivities. There are still lots of booths set up. They will probably be down when I ride home tonight. It looks like Pig Out in the Park was another rousing success.

Last Ride of the Month

I absolutely had to ride my bike today. It's the last day I can use my bus pass. Technically, I have two more days in the month to use it, but I won't.

It was a damn fine day to ride this morning and I could tell I hadn't ridden in over a week. My legs were screaming on the hill. But the weather was warm enough to make the ride pleasant and cool enough to wake me up.

We broke out the tandem last night and did a little ride around the park. I think I like it but thank God it's not my only bike. It seems like we can't go as fast . The difference between 18 and 21 speeds is amazing.

I also thought that it would be less effort but that did not seem to be the case. I think that part of the reason is because of the way I sit on it. It's a lot more upright than my mountain bike. You don't have the position where you can push down with some of your body weight. In this position, you have to use more leg.

Riverfront Park was all set up for this weekends Labor Day extravaganza, "Pig Out in the Park". It's already gone on for two days but the weekend is where it really takes off. In fact, I believe we are riding the tandem down there tonight.

I rode to Taco Bell at lunch time and I saw Tatt there. You may recall that he is one of the guys I see on the bus on a semi-regular basis. We continued to our relationship of not acknowledging each others existence. I did learn that his name is Glenn. (or Glen...not sure) They called his name when his order was ready. Somehow, I managed to remember it long enough to get it listed here. I'm horrible with names.

Crawling Commute

It's raining and has been over night. It was a good day to drive . . . until I hit the Freeway. It took me ten minutes to go the first mile. I usually try not to look at accidents because I hate feeding into the slowdown. It's really hard to NOT look!

Today the traffic was crawling along and so there was no reason not to look. As I came upon the accident, there was a large tractor trailer blocking my view. Even if I wanted to see it, I couldn't. Right at the last minute, the trailer pulled ahead, revealing this tremendous wreckage of a Semi Tractor that had hit the bridge abutment. I suddenly wished I had prepared my camera. What the Hell was I thinking, not having it at the ready?! I always have it with me for just such an occasion. I pretty much suck as a photographer.

With three days and 75 miles remaining to attain my goal of riding 150 miles for the month, I am forced to readdress my goal. I shall now attempt to at least beat last months total of 106 miles. Hopefully, the rain will have ended tonight so I can ride a few miles.

New Addition

I've been keeping my eye on Craigslist.com for a tandem bicycle. There have been a couple that are good deals but I can't get to them before someone else does. I finally beat the crowd to one yesterday.
The brand is Micargi, which I have never heard of and know nothing about. I found their website but it hasn't been very helpful so far. I want to find out if $350.00 is a good price. I think it is but I just don't know how good the quality is in a Micargi bike.
I'll tell you this. The thing is brand new. It's a nice clean bike with no scratches, blemishes or dings on it. It's an 18 speed bike. I'm going to get Susan and I entered into SpokeFest and ride the 26 mile course with this baby.

Approaching the Deadline

I was planning on riding my bike today, even with the questionable weather forecasts pridicting the chance of occassional showers. Then I remembered I have a Dentist appointment at three. That put the kill switch on riding.

I have six days remaining to ride about 75 miles.

A Huge Dissappointment

I am a huge disappointment to myself. I should be riding my bike and I could be riding my bike but I have managed to find reasons not to.

My strongest excuse for not riding was yesterday when it rained quite heavily for a good portion of the day. It would have been a wet ride to work but nice going home.

Today is perhaps my weakest excuse. Going to Costco after work. I could have ridden the bike and then rode home and then driven to Costco and meet Susan. It is certainly a nice enough day although the forecast is a bit trepidations. (That is not a word)

I blame the price of gas. I will fill up today for about $3.93 a gallon. I am astonished that I find that affordable but not $4.00 a gallon.

My excuse for not riding today has gained some strength. This is a picture of our parking lot about noon o'clock today. This picture does not do justice to the amount of rain that was coming down. The storm blew over pretty quickly but it was very intense. It seems as though the rain is going to stick around for a while.

I am vindicated! And waaaaaay behind in my miles.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Rain

Today is the first day since I have been riding where it rained heavy enough to prevent me from riding the bike. I drove yesterday too but I had important errands that required a larger carbon footprint for the day.

Today, I'm just a pussy.

Monday, August 18, 2008

Hot Hot Hot!

Yesterday's record breaking temperature was 103. Today is supposed to be cooler. It may get down into the 90's.

I didn't get very much bike riding in this weekend but I figured I'm about 90 miles away from goal of 150 for the month. I should be able to reach that.

I rode a few laps around the park last night. I set a pace time for one lap. I did the mile in 4:07. So now I have the goal of breaking the four minute mile. I'm just so damn goal oriented.

Returning Some Miles

What a beautiful morning. The temperature was comfortable, the landscape was peaceful and I was back on the bicycle.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Way Way Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Behind

I drove again.

I was planning on riding the bike today but I just have too much running around to do. I tried to fit it in yesterday but I ended up spending more time at the Doctors office than I planned. Nothing serious. They were able to fit me in for an Ultra Sound that we had not planned on. It's good to have that out of the way so I don't have to go back to have it done later. The good news from the Ultra Sound on me is that.....it's a boy!

Right now, we are just over a third of the way through the month and I am just short of a third of my miles needed to make my goal. I will ride tonight. I think I'll do some hills. Well, the hill! My goal there is to be able to get up the hill without taking a break.

Falling Waaaaaay Behind

Due to circumstances beyond my ability to care, I drove today. So again I am losing valuable miles towards my goal of 150 miles ridden this month.

I did manage to get out and ride a little this weekend. I got some great shots of Lightning on Friday evening. I took over 200 pictures to get about 15 that were any good. Here's one of them.

Friday, August 8, 2008

Falling Behind

I'm going to have to ride my bike a lot this weekend to catch up to my pace for attaining my goal. I only rode about 6 miles yesterday and I drove to work today.

I'm working both Saturday and Sunday at the bar so I am not going to have much time to get out there and ride.

The last couple of days have been bloody hot and today will be no better. Plus, thunder storms are threatening to burst forth. Another good reason the drive rather than ride.

Also, the price of gas is approaching my tipping point, from the high side. It's almost down to $4.00 a gallon. My riding the bus has made the price come down. I never thought I had that much clout.

Next I will see what I can do about high Cable prices.

Nothing to Report Again

It tried to rain on me this morning but, through a series of gracefully executed avoidance transpositions, I was able to miss it.

I forgot my bus pass this morning. I left it in my shirt pocket last night. Fortunately, I realized it early and I had a dollar so I was able to get on.

Beyond that, all I can report is that I rode about se7en miles yesterday.

Handy Bicycle Mechanics Trick

I stopped at a local bike shop (Wheel Sport) on my ride home last night. I needed to get a price on fenders and a bike rack. The kind sits over the rear wheel and allows me to add saddle bags. It looks like those items will cost me around $80.00 total.

I bought a couple of mirrors, one for me and one for Susan. It is a vast improvement over the mirror I had. It was one of those mirrors where objects are closer than they appear. I could never see anything behind me until it was right on top of me. This mirror is clear and sits snugly at the end of the handle bar.

The guy at the bike shop gave me great tip for installing the mirror. It fits into the tube at the end of the handle bar. Some bikes have caps over the hole and some have a grip. Our bikes have grips. So rather than take a knife and cut a ragged hole, he suggested using a hammer and tapping the end of the bar. That will cut the end of the grip off in a nice clean manner. It worked great!

Wheel Sport is selling Scooters. Fifty CC little scooters that get a hundred miles to the gallon and go about 30 mph. They are selling new ones for about $2,000.00. I need to start keeping an eye out for something like that. That and a tandem bike!

I rode the bus at my regular time and it was not as full as last week. Perhaps I need to log ridership by day of the week. Jasper and I got our bikes on and all was cool.

Yesterdays Total Mileage: 11.3 Miles

New Schedule

To make up some of the hours I lost dealing with the kitties, I rode an earlier bus today. I caught the 6:12 instead of the 6.42.
As I rolled out of the driveway for my morning ride downtown, the traffic lights were still blinking. In fact, they stopped blinking just as I approached the only traffic light I have to go through prior to entering the park. Fortunately, it turned green.
When I arrived at the Bus Plaza, I was surprised to see this scene. Normally, there are lots of people waiting around and several buses. I was the first one to the bus stop. I was not alone for long. The bus arrived and suddenly there were people all over. Also, the bus had one bike on the rack when it showed up.
My main point is that the bus was full.
While riding, I came to the realization of something I have known but never examined closely. If it wasn't for being able to ride my bike, I probably wouldn't be riding the bus. I like having the mobility to at least get out at lunch and manage a couple of errands. It's much less convenient without the bike.
Now that I have written it down and re-read it, it doesn't seem quite as profound as when I was being introspective and thinking of it. Part of my ride involves what I will write in this Blog. Is the Blog taking over?

Cat Duties

I rode the bike a lot this weekend so I gained some extra miles towards my goal. Good thing too because I had to drive to work today. I had an appointment this morning and take the cats in for their shots. Four cats, one trip, all done!

So, today will count as two and a half days driving to work. I drove out and back once. I drove half way back to go to the Vet. And then I drove out and back again.

The Gang hated the ride there as they do not like to be stuffed in the Cat Carriers. It always makes TJ pee. Today was no different.

Remarkably, they were very quiet on the ride home. They must have realized the torture was over and they were getting out of Gitmo.

Not as Chilly

It was a much warmer morning than in recent days. I couldn't find my gloves but it turned out I didn't need them. I had a nice ride downtown and really worked the hills for a change. I love the way I sail into and through the park in the morning.

To help with passenger bike flow, I took the Sullivan #72 Bus today.

I got down to the Bus Plaza and there was an unfamiliar girl standing there with a bike. Jasper wasn't there yet. By rights, I had my spot on the bus. When Jasper rolled up a few minutes later, he and I exchanged a look and then I said I would take the other bus. It gets me out to Liberty Lake about 10 to 15 minutes later than the #74. It also is a full bus. The majority of people get off as it goes through the Industrial Park.

It works out better for Jasper because the bus I normally ride goes right past his work. Going home is when time makes more of a difference to me. I always want to be home as fast as I can.

It is August now and I have a new mileage goal of 150 miles. There are 21 days in August in which I could ride to work. That means I have to ride se7en miles every one of those days. I plan on taking a few more evening rides to help pull those numbers up. Only 147.5 miles to go.

Goals and Totals

At about 6:22 this morning, just after passing the Northside entrance to Riverfront Park, the odometer on my bicycle hit 100. I have attained my goal for the month and without really trying. Next month I shall set the goal for 150 miles. I think that deserves a smoke!

It was another chilly morning but I wore my gloves so my comfort level was tolerable for the 10 minute ride. The morning air really wakes you up.

I counted 23 riders this morning. Nearly every seat had someone in it. Soon, we'll have to share our seats. It may come to a point where we have to talk to each other.

I had a little conversation with Jasper. He was talking about forest fires in Red Lodge, Montana where he was born. Then, as the bus rolled up, he said, "Here comes our Cadillac."

I purchased my August Bus Pass so I'll be doing this for another month. It is therefore time to quickly look back at July for an accounting of the vital statistics.

Days Riding the Bus: 18
Cost per Ride: $ 0.91.6
Money Spent on the Bus: $ 33.00
Money Spent on Gas: $ 77.00
Estimated Gas $ Saved: $163.00
Money Spent on the Bike: $158.20
Items Lost on Bus: 2 Pair Sunglasses
Estimated Value: $ 15.00
Miles Rode: 105.7

Outcome: Everything considered, I figure I made about $726.51 this month by riding the bus. Hey, it's my Blog.....it's my Math!

DO NOT READ THIS!!!

An appointment with my Doctor kept me off the bus today so I have nothing to report. One would think that I just wouldn't make an entry, but one would be wrong.

Accurate Info

This morning, I rolled up to the bus stop and had the bus waiting for me. That's the closest I've come to missing the bus since I started riding.

I counted 15 riders this morning. That's not as many as I thought were riding when I mentioned it yesterday, but the number is up since I started riding the bus earlier this month.

I wore a sweatshirt this morning and was glad I did. It definitely girded me against the bracing morning air. My backpack is filling up with necessary accoutrement's required for me to ride in more inclement conditions. I really need to get a rack, or perhaps a lovely little basket on the front. The kind that would get you beat up if it appeared on your bike when you were a kid.

Damn! I've just realized that I have lost another pair of sunglasses on the bus. I put them on the seat and then forget them when I leave. I just bought those glasses last weekend. There's ten dollars down the bus rat hole.

End of the Month

It's been four days since I rode my bike. I took Friday off and went to Seattle with my lovely wife to celebrate her birthday.

While there, I noticed that many of the bikes racks on the Seattle buses can hold three bikes. They need to be switching to those here in Spokaloo. They probably need to be looking for an arrangement that can accommodate four bikes. I have no idea if such a thing exists but I am willing to bet someone is working on the problem. I just don't see the need for bike space loosening up.

The ride this morning was uneventful and passed quickly. Good thing too, cuz it's chilly in the morning. I'll soon be riding with a jacket.

At the start of the month, the Spokane River was running unusually high and fast for this time of year...thanks to our wet Spring. Today, the river was barely at a trickle.

I was the only bike person on the bus this morning but I noticed that the number of people riding the bus is going up. I'll bet the bus had 25-30 people on it this morning. That is up substantially from earlier this month.

I am now beginning to tally up my various monthly totals to see how I have done at saving money and being a F.O.T.E. (Friend of the Earth) I'll have all that information on Thursday for the end of month round-up.

One of the goals I would like to set for next month is to build up some mileage on the bike. I am very close to 100 miles for the month and I think I can reach that if I do some extra riding in the next few days. If so, I'll set next months goal at 150 miles.

I know I'll be driving on Wednesday because I have a doctors appointment that day. Beyond that, I should be on the bus and racking up the miles.

Driving Day

The various errands that I must perform in order to properly conduct my life have built up again and I had to drive today. When one does not drive for a while, one notices the luxury and great privilege of driving ones own vehicle. It's quite liberating. But it also very costly. Today, gas is selling for $4.16 a gallon.

I have not yet ridden the bus for the entire week. One week had a holiday in it so I might have made five days then. Something has always come up that compelled me to drive. That cuts into the discounts I was expecting by buying the monthly bus pass.

Suckfest Ride Home Averted

I now have a large plastic bag in my backpack for the next occassion when it rains.

It was pouring rain when I left to catch the bus. I walked the bike across the street and tried to stay dry by standing under a tree. It wasn't really helping. The bus came along in no time. But as it approached, I saw the rack was full. The next bus was about ten minutes away. I ran back to work and stood at the door of our garage watching for the bus. When I saw it, I raced across the street and thank the Lord, the rack was empty.

I was not looking forward to the ride once I got downtown. I was considering taking one of the northbound buses when I noticed that the sky over downtown was clearing.

When I got off the bus, it appeared as if the rain had totally missed downtown. I happily peddled home and arrived about 15 minutes later than ususal.

There is a new bike rider on the bus today and as such, Jasper gave up his space to allow her on. I noticed a bike rider at the Valley Mall who wanted on the bus. So the competition for rack space is increasing.

It's Getting Tight

So far, everything has worked out very well with the Bike Racks on the buses and their availability. I just know that is not going to last. I organized my schedule to allow for flexibility if the need arises.

This morning was another day where I rolled out of bed and thought, "I should just drive today." But I fought that urge off and I was glad I did. The morning ride is very enjoyable. I especially like crossing the river each day and seeing how much water is flowing. It's nice to go through the park in the early morning and still see it teaming with people going about their business. "Teaming" probably isn't the right word.

One thing I didn't take into account was that it might rain today. The weather has been great all month. It hasn't even threatened to rain. It was a very nice morning just like every other morning since I started riding to work. I went out at lunch and the prospect of rain looked plausable. Right now, it looks like a 100% stone cold lock...cuz it's pouring.

Requiem for a Mirror

I found my mirror!

Let's back up. I think I made mention of the loosing of my mirror. It probably was an off-hand statement made in passing in one of my entries.

On Friday, I went out to catch the bus across the street from work. As I was standing at the bus stop, I happened to look down at the curb...and there it was, my dearly departed mirror. Clearly, it is usable no mo.And so I offer up a little good-bye to my former mirror.

I have since purchased a new one. I like the way it attaches, with a Velcro strap around the handle. It is easily removable as well as easily put on-able.

I do not care for the fact that it is one of those mirrors where objects in mirror are closer than they appear. (I have a similar mirror at home where objects in mirror are older than they appear) I can't see a car coming until it's right behind me. I need a bit better warning than that. So I will keep searching.

Chilly Morning

I really felt the wind whipping through me this morning as I started off on my trek downtown. I didn't warm up as much as I got used to it.

On the bus ride out to work this morning, I ran into Larry. He got on the bus at the Mirabeau Park & Ride. He is a semi-regular customer at Scotty's Bar & Grill, where I tend bar on Saturdays. He has a P.O. Box out at the Liberty Lake Post Office. I think he used to live out at Liberty Lake. That's the only reason I can think that he would maintain a P.O. Box so far from where he lives.

Anyway, we chatted during the ride out, talking about my riding the bike and his getting mail and walking around. Nothing of any consequence.

I am continually noticing an increase in my stamina as I ride, especially on hills. I went on a little ride last night and climbed a considerable hill. As I stopped and rested about half way up, I watched as this Hippie guy rode right on past me...flip-flops, no helmet, just cruisin' up da hill.
Bastard!

I'm going to try that hill again tonight and try to do better.

Without Even Trying

I rode 6 miles yesterday. On a normal day of just riding to and from downtown, I will go about four miles. I took a little ride at lunch time yesterday and added the extra two. It doesn't take much to pile up the mileage.

While waiting for the bus this morning, I was making small-talk with Jasper. As the bus pulled up, he said, "Here comes our Cadillac." With equally quick wit I responded, "Yup!"

That's the kind of jocularity we toss around every morning.

Speed Racer

I had a haircut appointment on the other side of town last night so I hitched a ride with a co-worker who lives nearby. I knew my ride home would be easy because it was downhill until I got downtown to pick up my regular route home.

The first part of my ride was great. I went through Manito Park. Even the streets leading up to the park are nice. They are wide tree covered boulevards. It was pastoral, peaceful and entirely enjoyable...and downhill, even if ever so slightly.
Heading into downtown, the route became very downhill. I took a fairly busy street that goes right through the heart of downtown. At one point, my speedometer read 37 mph. That is fast on a bicycle. I was peddling for all I'm worth to keep the speed up. I didn't want to impede traffic. I came upon another guy on a bike in my lane and we rode through downtown together. I never felt endangered or uncomfortable around all the other cars.

Once I was on my normal route home, I made a slight detour. Instead of traveling up Wall Street which is a residential street with low to no traffic, I went up Howard Street, which is one block to the east. It's a four lane arterial that isn't terribly busy and has traffic lights at the busier intersections. I was not able to maintain my speed to keep in sync with the lights. I had to wait for the light at the busy cross street. I kind felt obligated to follow the law whereas I would sail through an uncontrolled intersection...providing it was clear of course. I probably won't go that way again. My total mileage for the day was Eight point Four miles and it took me about 25 minutes to ride the six miles across town.

Back in the Saddle Again Again

Wow! You miss a few days on the bike and your body lets you know it. It was a bit of a tough ride on my hill this morning.

I got down to the Plaza and I saw "the Polynesian waiting for the bus. I eyed him a little more extensively and came to realize that my caricature is not even close. For starters, I should have named him "the Native American".

Caricatures on the Bus

Due to many weekend considerations and obligations, I lost another day of riding the bus today. I had items to return to the Rental Store first thing this morning and that made it necessary to drive the car.

Now that I am developing into the routine of mostly daily bus travel, I am starting to recognize other fellow commuters who ride my bus. It gives me the opportunity to practice my caricaturing abilities...which are minimal.

I have named this guy Jasper. No particular reason. He just seems like a Jasper. He works out at the Oxford Suites Hotel at Sullivan. He sometimes rides his bike.

This guy I call "the Polynesian". He looks Hawaiian. I think he works across the street from my work place. I don't have any more information on him because I have not spoken with him. But, he is an interesting enough character that I was able to come up with a drawing of him.

It's not always easy to create a good caricature. If they have a certain glint in their eyes or a particular way of carrying themselves, it makes it very difficult for me to capture that. I know people who are good at it, but I'm not one of them.

Finally, my last drawing is Tatt, named for his many and extensive tattoos. He always wears black and he often wears a hood pulled down over his head and face. This is another guy with which I have had no interaction. But, when I see an interesting face and I'm able to recall it later, I record it. I need to do this more often. These three are the only ones that have struck me enough for me to try and draw them.

Back in the Saddle

After a day in the drivers seat, I'm back in the saddle again. I made it back just in time for a very chilly morning. I was not prepared for that as my hands got a little frosty. It got me thinking about all the other bicycling accessories I still need to get. Gloves come immediately to mind. (Is it "Gloves come" or Gloves comes"? Or Glove comes?!)

Additionally, I am going to need fenders if I want to continue riding into the vicinage of inclement weather.

There was an impressive wild fire in the Valley last night and I got a good look at the area this morning as the bus motored down the freeway. It was still burning as of this morning. I don't know the status of the fire control for now but I bet it will be smoldering for days to come.

Driving Day

I am amazed at how odd it feels to drive to work...or just to drive at all. Since I have been riding the bike/bus, I will go several days without getting in my car.

Another day on Two Wheels

Some mornings seem an awful lot harder to get going than others. I dragged myself out of bed at the last moment and puttered around the house getting ready to leave. I left the house with about 15 minutes to spare before the bus arrived.

I wanted to make it on time so I really laid into the peddles right from the start of my ride. Right away I felt like my body wanted to be back in bed and was having none of this peddling crap. I made it to the Bus Plaza with several minutes to spare but I needed the rest. Then, I left my water bottle on the bus.

Nine days into my Biking Experience and tomorrow I will drive. I need to drive as I have a few errands piling up on me. I need to order a storm window for the bathroom, stop by a Frame Shop and buy some new shirts. I'll fit all that in plus take my bike in for servicing. It'll be a loooong lunch.

Break Even Day

Today is the day that I would have spent the equivalent in gas as I have on my bus pass. After today, I begin to MAKE money. Okay...SAVE money.

Now that I have been doing this for a week, I'm beginning to break down my morning ride into little segments.

The first half mile is level with just a slight downhill incline. I try to peddle at a pretty good pace. At three quarters of a mile I hit my first and only hill heading downtown. The steep part is only a block long so I try to power through that as best I can. I notice that I'm getting faster.

After the hill, it all levels out again and I go through a neighborhood I call Blight Street. Old beat up houses. Garbage and crap on porches and in yards. Nobody cares there.

Blight Street brings me right out to the Arena. There is a good downhill grade that leads right to the park. I try to see how much speed I can gather and then how far into the park I can coast. I'll get a distance tomorrow when I remember. I think it's a good quarter mile into the park before I run out of steam at the YMCA.

From there, it's a wonderful ride through beautiful Riverfront Park. In the morning, it's nice and cool and quiet and empty. It's a very easy ride to the Bus Plaza where I catch my ride to work. The distance is 2 miles.

When I get off the bus at Liberty Lake, I have read the paper and am refreshed and ready to face the day. I cycle another half mile to the office and I have commuted.

Three Day Weekend Hangover

It was a tough ride this morning. My legs really feel drained. I have one hill to go up during my ride downtown. It is not big and no more than a block long. But I really had a difficult time getting up it this morning. My legs were aching as I peddled along in my highest gear. I felt the ssame way when I got off the bus for my short ride to the office.

What a wimp!

Pre-Independance Day

I felt just a tingle of sprinkle as I rode to the bus this morning. I thought it might have been dew or sap falling from a tree until I felt it downtown waiting for the bus.

I got a bit of a late start this morning so I was really rushing to get downtown. But there was nothing to worry about. I still made it with 5 minutes to spare. That means I can stay in bed until six if I want. Or it gives me more time in the morning to do some things around the house. For example, the bird feeder (also known as the cat feeder) went empty this morning. The birds are gonna be pissed. The cats are going to be livid.

I left work last night at 4:15 rather than 4:30. That 15 minutes makes a huge difference in my commute home. First, the bus is empty so there is no competition for space on the bike rack. Secondly, I got home about 40 minutes sooner. I am hoping my boss will be understanding and allow me to keep leaving at 4:15.

Good Luck with that!

Rack Competition

I had an uneventful trip home last night but I can see that there is going to soon be an issue of too many bikes and not enough racks on the buses. Thankfully, they run two different routes out to Liberty Lake at about the same time. The first bus usually has a full rack but there is room on the second.

I have been trying to remember to take a bottle of water with me but I tend to forget it. I had one ready to go last night and I forgot it. I had one ready to go this morning and I forgot it. I seem to remember it just as soon as I want some water.

It is Day Three of my Month of Riding. By Day Six, I will begin saving money. It takes 5 1/2 days of riding the bus to pay for the Monthly Pass. There will be a big celebration on Tuesday.

I suppose I should make some mention to the local bike shop. The guy that owns it looks like Lance Armstrong. I took my bike back there yesterday and told him that the service he had performed on the bike did not fix the problem. I frankly do not believe that he did anything to it and neither does my Bike Consultant, Don.

I left it with him and he was going to again do a thorough cleaning or replace the bracket if needed. When I returned after work, he had not gotten to it yet.

So, I will try to take it in again today and see if he can "git r'dun" today.

The F.U.B.A.R. Ride Home*

The temperature was well into the 90's yesterday. That makes for a lovely ride to work but a very hot ride home. I didn't make it any easier on myself.

Last Friday, I took my bike over to the local bike shop to have a critical portion of the bike repaired. I needed a new lower bracket which is the bearing assembly that the peddles turn around.

I drove to work on Friday with the bike in back. I dropped the bike off and told the guy I would be back at 4:30.

Upon returning at 4:35, the guy had me stand around for a few minutes before telling me it wasn't ready. I said I had a quick errand and would it be done in half an hour. He said yes and off I went.

I returned and the bike was sitting out on the floor. I paid the $15.00 and wheeled it out to the car.

When I rode it to work yesterday, it did not feel like it was any better. Don, who is my Bicycle Consultant at work, said it had not been replaced. The bike store was of course, closed on Monday.

I left work at 4:30 yesterday when my office thermometer had to be hitting 98 degrees. I had every intention of waiting the 15 minutes at the stop for the bus, but decided at the last minute to try and ride the six or so miles to the bus's next stop. I'm riding the bike in part for exercise and here was a perfect (if not sweltering) opportunity.

It was a very nice ride, paralleling the Spokane River the whole way. When I reached Sullivan Road, which was close to my goal, it was also very close to the time the bus would be getting there.

I was riding down Indiana keeping an eye on my rear view mirror for the bus. It wasn't long before I saw the bus coming up on me and I was still a good mile from the Park and Ride spot where the bus would pick me up.

I stepped up my peddling and as the bus came along side me I waved at the driver and he pointed to the next stop up ahead.

I had made it! I was sweaty and out of breath, but I made it.

I sat back in the coolness of the air conditioned bus and congratulated myself as the bus turned onto a street it was not supposed to turn on.

It went up the the YMCA and turned around and headed back towards the Park and Ride. It began to dawn on me that I should have checked the number on the bus. Was this Bus Number Se7enty-Four? There was nothing in the cabin of the bus to indicate what the route was. I noticed the schedules and didn't see one for Se7enty-Four.

As we pulled out of the Park and Ride, I saw Bus Number Se7enty-Four pulling in. I pulled the stop cord, got a transfer and got off.

Bus Number Se7enty-Four was right behind the bus I got off. As I stood there with my bike, proudly pleased with myself for having figured out the system, I noticed that the bike rack was full. The driver slowed and kind of shrugged at me.

One of the things I have been concerned about riding the bus is the availability of open bike racks. I figured I would run into the problem. I just didn't expect it on my first day. I'm sure that as the price of gas goes up, it is going to become more of an issue.

The bus passed on by and I was struggling with the despair of the system failing me. Suddenly, the bus stopped and a guy hopped off. He was one stop short of his goal but since he had a bike, it didn't matter. He jumped off and gave his space to me.

Finally, as the bus pulled onto the Freeway, I was able to congratulate myself in the air conditioned coolness of Bus Number Se7enty-Four.

*that turned out okay

Pre-July Training

I am off and running on my quest to ride my bike to work for the rest of the summer. It was a little tough getting up this morning as I had a busy weekend. I cut down three trees yesterday.

So far, I'm into this thing for a dollar. There will be an additional dollar this afternoon. When I get downtown, I'll buy a monthly pass.

It was a nice morning and I have nothing of consequence to report.

New Adventures in Phatness

My running efforts since Bloomsday have been less than stellar. I started out okay but then I went on vacation in Iowa and ran head-on into pollen. I have never suffered from allergies before but I got a good taste of it in Iowa. They must have industrial strength farm pollen cuz it got to me. I would go for a run and not even make it a half mile before I had to stop and wheeze my way back. My eyes got a little puffy and I was coughing like a smoker.

So I got way out of the routine of running and have only run a mile a couple of times in the last month.

Monday will mark the commencement of a next phase in my fitness life. There are 22 work days in the month of July. I am going to attempt to ride my bike every one of those work days. Part of it is for exercise and part of it is to see how much money I save on gas. It is currently at $4.00 per gallon...and still rising...for no apparent reason...other than we will pay it. My calculations indicate I can save well over $100.00.

Now, this is not as quite as ambitious an effort as it may sound. While my ride to work is about 18 miles, I am peddling only a small portion of that. I will ride downtown and catch the bus. The buses are equipped with bike racks. Then I can ride the two blocks to work from where the bus drops me off.

The challenge is to re-arrange my life so I don't need the car. If I can do it in July, there is no reason I can't do it in August. Then I'll see if I'm up to the challenge of doing it into the Fall. And of course, I am not! But money is a strong motivating factor and if I actually lose some weight and firm up my flabbiness, that too will motivate me.

And so, let the month long bicycle extravaganza begin. And pray for me.

The Pay Off!

For many months now I have been going out and running. Partly to try and get in shape and partly to prepare for the Annual Bloomsday Run. Finally, my long routine of dog paddling in the glorious wake of modest achievement has paid off. I completed the afore mentioned Bloomsday Run and I shaved a minute off the time I posted last year.

1:44:03

It's not a great time. It's not an impressive time. But it is MY time and it pleases me.

Now, to continue the run for the other reason. I shall re-commence tonight.

Bloomsday Goal 1:45:00

I haven't been very happy with my running training over the last couple of weeks. I've been out there doing it, but I haven't been very dedicated to doing it well.

Finally, today, my last run before Bloomsday, it all seemed to be clicking for me. I ran three miles with no trouble. I felt like I could have run a fourth but that would have been pushing it. I developed a bit of numbness in my feet so I'm a little concerned about that aspect of my run.

At any rate, Bloomsday is Sunday and I guess I'll be running. If I can beat one hour and forty-five minutes, I'll be happy.

A New Course

I was sick a couple of weeks ago and lost a whole week of running. I was just about to start three mile runs when I got the cold. Since I started running again last week, I haven't been the same.

I decided I needed a different running course. I drove my car down to the Club last night and left it there. It's just under two miles from the house. I got up at 5:30 this morning and ran to the Club. It took me about 25 minutes and I really enjoyed it.

It didn't quite make it all the way. I stopped and walked for just a couple of minutes before crossing the Monroe Street Bridge. I always drive across it, almost never walk across it. It's kind of cool to be up there and see the raging river far below.

It was nice to have access to the Club at the end of my run. I went upstairs and did a couple of lifts and some sit ups. Then I hit the Steam Bath...my favorite room at the Club. The place was quite full this morning. I've never seen the shower completely filled up before today.

I weighed 217.

Mind Over Body

I have found that I get my second kick at about three quarters of a mile. Then I can settle in to a pretty good groove, get my breathing rhythm and just kind of shuffle along. My stride really isn't much more than a shuffle.

It's all about Mind over Body. My body is essentially a lazy thing. Been that way for over 50 years now. It doesn't tolerate pain well. My body is a Pussy. My mind is not much better. It is lazy and doesn't tolerate pain, but it occasionally gets disgruntled with poor performance and low standards. So it steps up sometimes and makes an attempt at a leadership role.

As I was running last night, the body really wanted to quit but the mind saw no reason. There was not much discomfort in the muscles and joints. In fact, considering the level of exertion, there was not much pain at all. The mind wanted to go for three miles.

The body was not happy about this but could see the benefit of trying to do more. An extra beer could be consumed. More dinner could be eaten without guilt.

I passed the front of the house which is the two mile mark and I kept going. It was here that the body began to protest. It's amazing how much pressure the body can exert to create a lack of will. I made it to the end of the block before I stopped.

I was still pleased with the outcome. I ran two miles in just under 24 minutes. Tonight I go for three.

Run Along Now

It's been five days since I had run so it was imperative that I got out last night. When I ran last Friday, I got in two miles. I find that the first mile is pretty bad and then I get a second kick at about 1.6 miles. I never made it to the kick last night. I finished the first mile and knew I was finished.

I took a little break and then ran another lap around the park, so I almost made two miles. That's the way I'm going to look at it.

Still rollin' fly and lookin' phat!

Another Running Update

My back seems to have mostly healed itself and doesn't bother me much. At least I can run again...such as it is. I have run twice this week and both times I could only muster a mile. Tuesdays' time was 11:01 and yesterday I did it in 11:35.

I'm really going to try for two miles tonight...but it's Friday so I can't make any promises.

Bad Weigh In

The home scale said 217. That sucks! I thought I had a pretty good weekend but I guess not. Something happened to my back on Saturday and I'm still a little stiff today.

Friday, March 14, 2008

Friday Night Run

I didn't run yesterday, partly because of a good steady rain coming down. But also because I still felt pretty wiped out from the two miles I ran on Wednesday. I have had to take a day off after each two mile run. My time for Wednesday was 25:12. That is not very respectable but better than if I had not run at all.

I'm still weighing in at about 213ish. I'm not losing weight because I keep straying into food. My will power sucks and I really need to discipline myself better.

I am happy to report that I did run tonight. I only ran a mile because I'm planning on attending a running training symposium tomorrow morning. Since I only had a mile to complete, I tried to make my best time. I had my best time so far this year with 10:50. I will attempt to beat that time tomorrow at the running training symposiarium.

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Semi Night Off

My legs were not happy with me yesterday. I felt creaks and groans I haven't felt for a while. There was some occassional weakness in my left knee.

I decided to take the night off but not completely. I walked the park. I walked at a pretty good pace. I think it was about 14 minutes. I bet if I work on it, I can walk the park as fast as I run it.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Two Mile Goal

I made two miles for the first time last night. Now that the time has changed to DST, it's lighter longer in the evening and much more enjoyable to run.

I ran the two miles in 24:12. That second mile was slower than the first, which took me about 11:30.

My legs are not happy with me today. They are stiff and crackly. We'll see how I do tonight.

Thursday, March 6, 2008

Exercise to Ski

I didn't run tonight but I have offset that deficit by skiing tomorrow. I am sure I will get more than enough of a workout to make up for missing my run.

Next , I will be writing from the Hospital Room.

Run Run Run

I ran the loop in 12:08 last night. I tried for two laps the night before but decided to wait until next week to add a mile. I started running with my wife who is much faster, and she wore me out.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Running Update

I ran three out of 5ive days last week. My other two times were over 12 minute miles.

I ran last night. Did the mile in 12:12. Kind of rainy.

I'm going to attempt two miles tonight. We shall see how I do.

215ish!

The First Run of the Season

Ran last night. One Mile! 11 minutes, 33 seconds. 219 pounds

I was amazed that I made a mile my first time out of the gate. I haven't been able to go that far on a treadmill. I really need to keep this up.

Monday, February 11, 2008

216

I am finally getting serious about working out. I got out of bed at 5 this morning and made my way down to the gym. I started slow, spending 20 minutes on the Eliptical Cross Country machine and ten minutes on the treadmill. I actually ran half a mile, which I think is pretty good for a first day back in training.

The scale presented me with a pleasant surprise as shown in the heading of this entry. That is a nearly 5 pound loss over last week.

That is a Damn Fine Start.

New Year, New Weight Loss Plan

I weighed in this morning and the scale at the Club said 218.5 pounds. I will weigh myself tomorrow (or perhaps tonight) on the new scale at home and see how close they match.

In the meantime, my lovely wife and I have made a bet to lose 15 pounds by April First. The Loser owes the Winner $50.00. If we both lose the poundage, then we get to take the money and go gain the weight back at a dinner somewhere.

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Phat in the New Year...Still!

The scale at the Club this morning said 220 pounds. The last time I tried the new one at home it said 217 point something.

Either way, I'm still over-weight.

And on the right side of the dirt.

So I have that going for me.
